Monalco uses a technique called Factor Analysis to determine which attributes best define a brand. Using quantitative marketing research techniques (such as surveys), customers rate several brands in a category against the same list of attributes. The Factor Analysis yields a set of underlying attributes or factors. These factors can then be used to construct perceptual maps and other product positioning devices.
